Title: Heartbound
Pairing: Boromir/ Elrohir.
Rating: PG
Summary: Boromir's appearance in Imladris complicates the twins'
lives, especially when he cannot tell the identical twins apart. AU,
pre-fellowship.
Warning: Slash (male/ male pairings)

hey y'all. if you happen to have been reading my Mirror Dance series featuring Elrohir and Boromir, know that eight chapters into the story i decided to change the name to Heartbound.

two reasons for that. first is that mirror dance was a sucky name to begin with. i never liked it, never thought it captured the essence of the story but i needed a title to post a fic on my groups so i had to think of a name. any name.

the second (better) reason is that the story has evolved. when i started writing i intended it to just be something short (3 chappies) and simple ('silly-mistake:misunderstanding:resolution) and that was it. it was meant to focus more on how alike/ unalike the twins are, thus 'mirror dance'.

instead, the bloody thing went to develop a plot. and a Protagonist.

so now i'm writing WAAAAYYYY beyond the original scope. and it's become a love story as seen thru Elrohir's eyes. quite sweet really, but did i mention WAAAYYYYY beyond the original scope? did i mention HOW way beyond the original scope?

well. just know that heartbound will have 9 chapters in all.

AND

it will have a sequel.

*sweatdrop*

so anyway. i am changing the name. cos i do want a break between the two parts of the story. for me at least there IS a marked shift, and i want to have that in two seperate Acts. if i continue with the name mirror dance then i will have to continue under the same title for both. (cos of the contents. dont ask.)

but i dont WANT to lump them all together.
*has a 'stubborn' problem, aka, spoilt brat*

back to the point (if ever there was one in this wierd and rambly rant), Mirror Dance Act 1 will be called 'Heartbound', and Mirror Dance Act 2 will be called 'Oathsworn', which i think very nicely sums up Elrohir's inner state throught the thing. originally they were all meant to be flat cardboard charries, but apparently they had other ideas. you have NO IDEA how much trouble they were. Elrohir especially. just cos he's sweet dont think he doesnt get his way. he went on strike and absolutely REFUSED to cooperate with me until i gave him his smut scene. Ick. i HATE writing smut. i so completely SUCK at it. (pun totally not intended. see? that's how much i suck at it.)

maybe i should just call them Mirror Dance Act 1: Heartbound/ Act 2: Oathsworn.....?
nah.

i had a dream last night. i was in this huge colonial house with a garden... it was huge. the garden, i mean. it was so large, and it was grass and trees and ferns and bushes... like a kampong house. i've been to the kampong before, and it's like those houses. i couldnt even see the next house from where i stood in the kitchen.

i was standing in the door because i heard a noise in the garden. two animals had somehow managed to come breach the fences and were being mauled by our dogs. there were so many of them. the dogs, i mean. maybe five in all. all large, brown shorthairs... the type that ang mohs like to keep in their holland village terraces.

the attacked were making such awful sounds that i had to help them. i wouldnt bear to watch them being torn apart. they were both cat-like... one was large, like a baby panther... and the other was a domestic cat. the common white-with-brown-patches kind. and the dogs, those damn dogs were mauling them.

i saw one of the animals, the cat, hold somthing in it's mouth, and it was the one the dogs were attacking most ferociously. it was a pink plastic bag, and it held something.i suddenly had a sense that the cat-figures were messengers, probably sent by my grandma through my grand aunt, and that what it carried was something it was bringing to me. and then i realised the dogs didnt know that, and were probably attacking them as theives. the dogs thought they were trying to take something out. what was really happening was that they were trying to bring something to me.

i was horrified. i screamed out for them to stop, but they didnt. the panther, who wasnt holding anything, wasnt being attacked so bad. but the cat was fighting them. it screamed and cried as it was torn apart but it never let go of the bag in it's mouth. it clung on to the bag in it's mouth. to the bag it was entrusted to deliver to me.

i ran out to try to stop them, but the dogs were in such a frenzy that i got scared. i was afraid that in their madness they might attack me. so i called out to them to stop, but they didnt listen to me. they only listen to my housemate and her mother, and i was the only one at home.

i was crying and the two animals were screaming so bad. i tried to put on her accent and imitate her, and call out to the dogs in her voice, but still they didnt listen. and then i got suddenly scared cos i realised that i was not in the house anymore. i had run out into the garden, and what if the dogs dont recognise me and thought i was another intruder? there was nobody at home. if they attacked me i'd die.

i was frozen for a second, terrified, then the fear grew bigger and snapped me out of my daze. i looked around for help and nobody was there. i saw that the dogs had not yet noticed me, or if they had they were ignoring me.

i turned back and ran back into the house, and all the time i was running up the steps i was scared one of them would leap on me from behind. but i got back to the house safely, and i wanted to slam the gate shut, but the dogs were comming towards me now, and i was too afraid to move. i thought if i kept still then maybe they wouldnt attack me.

they came closer, and trotted up the steps, and then laid the other two animals on the doorstep. i dont remember all of them. i was fixed on the dog who carried the cat in it's mouth. i could see his teeth pierce it's flesh. he laid the cat down on the doorstep, sniffed it a litte, then blinked at me and whined.

he wanted aknowlegement. he thought he had been doing something good. he thought he had been defending the house from invaders. my heart ached for the dog. he didnt know he had just killed the messanger who had brought me a gift.

when i didnt do anything, he whined, sniffed at the cat again and trotted off. what could i do? commend him for being so brave when he had killed something so dear to me? scold him when he thought he was protecting the area? what could i do?

after he left, the cat with the pastic bag stirred. i had thought it was dead but it wasnt. it looked up weakly, and up close i could see it was really a kitten. one of it's eyes was ruined where the dog's teeth had bitten into it, and it's fur was matted and covered with blood. the other messenger was also a bloody mess. it was sprawled on its side, unmoving. i didnt know if it was still alive.

the kitten nosed and prodded the bag, then looked up at me with it's one remaining eye and blinked mournfully. it looked like it wanted to get to something in the bag. careful not to scare it, i moved slowly and took the bag from it and untied the knot. there were peanuts inside.

i cracked one and are it. and then i remembered that the kitten had looked as if it wanted some of the food. it was hungry. i cracked another nut and held it out. the kitten blinked at me as if it were afraid i would hurt it. it was such an angel. it looked like one of those Precious Moments cartoons, but it had been hurt so bad. i remember crying for it, crying for it's pain, and crying for it's innocence lost.

i cried and crooned to it, and spoke softly to it, and it came up to me. it broke my heart that it still dared to trust after it had been hurt so bad. but looking at it, it couldnt help *but* trust. it was in it's nature to love and to trust. in it's innocence, it couldnt not.

it ate from my hand, but it was scared and weak and hungry, and it trembled. i felt it's teeth tear into my skin but i didnt pull back. what's a little pain if it's in the love of one who had suffered so much? it was so heartwrenching, that this small, frail thing was eating out of my hand in complete trust, whereas the bigger of the two was dead. i fed it a few nuts, and by the time it had stilled itself enough to regain controll of it's teeth, my hands were scarred and bloodied. it looked up at me in apology, and then i understood that it didnt want the nuts themselves. all it wanted was the nut shells. it would not have me give it any more of my food. it would only take what i did not need.

and then i woke up.

BE WARNED!!!!
The following post is A NEWSPAPER ARTICLE about the slash phenomena. it is NOT a dirty gay piece of fanfiction. stick thru the first few lines and it starts to sound like a newspaper article. and stick with the article for a nice little soundbyte from Craig Parker himself aka: the man who acted as Haldir The God.

Slash fiction: Elisabeth Easther on a new twist to the rings tale
(apparently an article from Metro, one of London's many newspapers)

Net pick up bad hobbits

'Legolas panted: "I need you so badly," grasping Boromir's face to
steal a passionate kiss from the human who'd stolen his heart.

"I am yours," Boromir gasped, surrendering to the elf, who dominated
his dreams and his desires, his every waking thought. Bugger the
Ring, they thought, those hobbits will just have to wait.'

If you're racking your brains, trying to remember when exactly in
the Rings trilogy Legolas and Boromir got it on, stop now because
the quotation is not Tolkien at all - it's pure Slash.

Slash Fan Fiction, to give it its proper title, describes scenes
between existing media characters (or real people such as musicians,
actors and sports starts) that are usually homoerotic, often
explicit and almost exclusively written by young, heterosexual
females.

Screen queens

Shirasade (an assumed name) is one such woman. She's a 24-year-old
university student from Switzerland who started writing Slash before
she even knew what it was. Then, when her family got Internet access
at home, she got discovered she wasn't alone in her passion for
writing up steamy gay scenarios using characters borrowed from film
and TV.

She explains the tendency towards homoeroticism by the fact that in
The Lord of the Rings, ad indeed most fantasy fiction, there just
aren't enough girls and the subtext is often very gay.

'In most action/adventure-oriented movies/TV shows,' she
says, 'women are little more than eye candy; damsels in distress or
prizes for the hero. What really leaves an impression is the
relationship between male characters. And of course, there's the
fact that the thought of two good-looking men crossing the
boundaries of friendship into love appeals to me.'

Fan meet fantasy

She's not the only one. Rosie (who was unwilling to divulge any
personal information other than her age - 24) started writing Slash
five years ago as an antidote to her college essays. 'It's just like
men fantasising about girls together, only the other way around,'
she says.

Elves, hobbits and humans are not alone in being given the Slash
treatment. In fact, the fiction genre was originally made popular in
the 1970s by Star Trek fans who put Kirk and Spick into compromising
positions. Ardent fans would write stories to distribute at fan
meetings, where the term Slash was coined - a reference to the /
that splices the two characters together, for example Harry
Potter/Han Solo.

Since then, the genre has grown into a phenomenon; type Slash
Fiction into Google and you get 410, 000 pages returned. There are
sites that specialise in reviewing it, sites that explain it, sites
that direct fans to academic papers on it and even sites that give
instructions on how to write it.

Actor Craig Parker, who played the Elf Lord Haldir in The Lord Of
The Rings, learned about Slash at a fan conference in Australia.

'I was at an autograph signing when a very polite young woman handed
me a stapled wad of paper that she asked me to read later,' he said.

'Basically, there were endless scenarios that began with Peter Jack
crying: "That's a wrap!" and ending with various combinations of
cast members sated and sticky. In fact, I'm amazed anyone had the
time or energy to film anything at all.'

For some actors, it could be unnerving to find themselves featuring
in explicit adventures, but not Parker. 'Slash,' he says, 'is not
something I would fill my bookshelves with. And while I take no
offence at its existence, I have no desire to read it or to find out
what my fictional alter ego is up to. I do take some comfort in
knowing that one of us at least is having an exciting Friday night.'
